Due to cuts to the Indiana State Library budget, as of August 1, access to several databases made available through the INSPIRE program will be significantly altered or unavailable as we seek access through alternative avenues.

Archives and Special Collections

In-Person Research

Indiana University Northwest Archives is home to a large collection of rare and one-of-a-kind materials documenting the history of the Calumet Region, so we ask our researchers to observe certain rules and handle items with care to help preserve these collections for future generations.

  • All research will be conducted within the Archives Reading Room.
  •  Materials will be brought to the researcher and re-shelved by the archives staff.
  • Materials do not circulate (they cannot leave the archives).
  • Only handle one archival box at a time, please maintain the documents in the order they are presented.
  •  Please do not eat or drink while in the Reading Room.
  • A small break room is nearby with a mini fridge for lengthy research appointments.
  • Use gloves (provided) when handling photographs or certain fragile artifacts.
  • Use pencils instead of pens, outside electronic devices are permitted. Guest Wi-Fi access is available.
  • Researchers can use personal cameras (without flash) to take images for personal and research use, (see our duplication policy for more details.
  • Please reach out for accessibility accommodations

On-Site Equipment

  • Community patrons have access to a desktop Dell computer in the room. Indiana residents may obtain a library card at the circulation desk on the first floor, and login into the computer using their card.
  • There is an Epson Expression XL12000 Scanner. It can scan in multiple formats and has a bed size of 12 x 17.
  • A Xerox copy machine is available in the archives available for physical copies.

Please see our POLICIES page for more information about scanning and duplication

Remote Research

We recognize that not everyone has the time or resources to visit our Reading Room in person. Thus, we currently offer limited remote research services for those working from a distance. These services include:

  • Limited staff-assisted scanning (please see our POLICIES page)
  • Limited research assistance*

*With clear direction from patrons, staff can conduct focused research within our holdings for up to one hour. This may include tasks such as locating materials within a designated collection, identifying documents related to a particular subject or date, finding photographs within a given box, or completing other specific focused research requests. Because archival research can be time-consuming and complex, we cannot guarantee that the requested information will be found within the allotted time. In such cases, we may encourage you to plan an in-person visit or hire a proxy researcher for further assistance.
