Community Patron Guide

This guide is intended to clearly lay out policies and provide resources as relevant to community patrons.

What is a Community Patron?

Within the Indiana University Northwest library, community patron is defined as a person who is not enrolled or working at Indiana University, but is an Indiana resident OR an Ivy Tech student.

Guides and Support Services

This box on the guide is a tabbed content box. You would click on the other tabs to see the information in them.

IU Northwest library employees will not assist with processes involved in seeking employment - such as writing or proofreading covers or resumes, working through job application sites, or similar requests. However, we can provide the below resources to get you on the right track.

In addition to the resources below, IU Alumni can utilize Career Services for help in these and related matters.

The Urban League of Northwest Indiana can assist with income tax every Spring as of this writing (3/8/24). The service applies to any Indiana resident making $60,000 or less per year.

Their office is located at 3101 Broadway in Gary, Indiana. From the IU Northwest campus, the office can be found by heading north on Broadway - past the Little Calumet River, before the Citgo station, on the east side of the street.

The IU Northwest business department previously offered tax assistance but discontinued that program. Urban League continues this service today with volunteers.

Our library does not provide legal assistance. We do not have the training or education required for proper help with legal matters.

We do not have a law library. We previously had a law library in the late 90s and early 00s, but no longer having an on-site expert and the collection growing out of date over time led us to remove these materials from the collection.

The best legal resource for Indiana residents is the Indiana Self-Service Legal Center. This page offers court forms and resources to find legal help, among other legal topics.

The next best resource may be the Ruth Lilly Law Library at Indiana University Indianapolis. Their librarians may be able to assist through chat or at the Reference phone number. Bear in mind that their primary focus is their library affiliates and students, but they will attempt to answer when possible.

The IU Northwest campus offers a variety of services that are available to community patrons. While this guide seeks to list them, services may change over time, or the library may not be aware of a service - and therefore miss listing it on this page. Please contact the library if you know of important changes or additional services not listed here.
