HIST 105 American History I: Places to Visit

This guide is for Professor Christopher Young's American History I course.


Every resource in this LibGuide is accessible by Indiana University Northwest students.  However, other researchers may access the web sites and e-journals.

Because "Indiana history" is a broad topic, this guide includes popular subjects, as well as, people and buildings pertaining to Northwest Indiana.

Historic Sites

Beverly Shores Depot

This railroad depot was built in 1929.


Brown Mansion
700 W. Porter Avenue
Chesterton, IN 46304

Hours: Monday-Friday 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

The mansion was built in 1885 by George Brown, a farmer.


Buckley Homestead
3606 Belshaw Road
Lowell, IN
Tours are conducted by the Lake County Parks Department.

Agricultural life during the 19th and early 20th centuries is depicted on this active farm.


Melvin A. Halsted Home

Tours by Appointment 219-696-8137

Melvin Halsted, the founder of Lowell, built the first brick home in Lake County.


Wood's Grist Mill
9410 Old Lincoln Highway
Hobart, IN  46342

This mill was built in 1837.  Photos and data are found here.
